Gourd-geous Gourds!

Make Art! Create something beautiful! Why? Because there's money in it! Haha, well sometimes, mostly its just fun and good for your brain.

I found these gourds at Finn Meadows Farm while I worked there. They were in a torn up, water logged trash bag covered in mold. I decided to clean them up, decorate them and sold several at the farmer's market. Trash made beautiful then turned into dolla' bills yo. Thats what I'm talkin' about

1. Clean them up with soap and water. A more diligent cleanse would also include a scrub down with a bleach solution. Maybe 10 parts water to one part bleach. The bleach will kill mold and keep it from growing back.

2. cut an opening and scoop out the insides. I used a variety of saws depending on the gourd and what I wanted to turn it into. Most effective was a small flexible hand saw and a table saw. Please use caution when using potentially dangerous tools!

The Seeds! Don't eat them. They are most likely poisonous! Bleh!

4. Scrape out the inside of the gourd. I used a metal spoon. Keep going till there are no furry fibers. Then seal the inside. I used modge podge first and then when it was dry added one layer of gold paint for the inside of this bowl. It kept it looking natural with a little shine. Gold is so Glam!

5. If you are painting you're gourd, paint a white base so your colors pop.

6. I painted a layer of modge podge over each finished piece. Modge Podge has been a hobby favorite since 1967.

Some Gourds are so pretty on their own! I left these ones alone and put them out with pumpkins on our porch for fall decor.

These pretty baby's were fun to paint. I'm pretty flower crazy so anytime I can add blooms to something   I do it!

Hooray! What trash to treasure's have you come up with? Have you made anything from a gourd? I'd love to see pictures and hear all about it.
